PLA vs PETG vs ABS vs ASA: Which Filament Should You Choose?
PLA, PETG, ABS and ASA are the four most common FDM filaments for real parts. They look similar on the spool, but they behave very differently once a part is in use: in the sun, near a motor, or under a load. This guide compares them in plain terms so you can pick the right one before you order.

Heat values are approximate softening points. Real limits depend on the load and the exact grade.
PLA: best for prototypes and display parts
PLA is easy to print, stiff and accurate, with crisp details and good colours. It is the cheapest way to check size, fit and look. Its weak points are heat and impact: a PLA part left in a hot car can sag, and it tends to snap rather than bend. Choose PLA for concept models, fit checks, display pieces and jigs that stay indoors at room temperature.
PETG: the all-rounder for functional parts
PETG is tougher than PLA and handles more heat. It bends before it breaks, resists many chemicals and water, and works well for brackets, enclosures, holders and parts that get handled every day. It can leave fine strings on detailed parts, and its surface is glossy rather than crisp. If you are unsure which filament to choose for a working part, PETG is usually a safe start.

ABS: tough and heat resistant
ABS is the classic engineering plastic used in many consumer products. It survives higher temperatures than PETG and can be sanded, glued and smoothed with solvent for a near-moulded finish.
